Sutton was founded in 1983 and subsequently altered the course of an entire industry on the principle that real estate was driven by highly personalized relationships between the REALTOR® and their customers. As such, the Sutton System was designed to put the REALTOR® – not the real estate company – at the center of each business transaction. It delivers consumer-driven services, cost-control and creative business freedom to independent Realtors® on the front lines of the industry.

Sutton was also the first real estate company to offer each of its 8,700 REALTORS® with a personal email and custom website at the industry-renowned ‘sutton.com’ address. This initiative positioned its REALTORS® as specialized information brokers, and empowered them to continue growing responsive relationships through a cohesive – and still personal – marketing strategy.

The Sutton Story

This is a story with a history of innovation, a future of opportunity and a tradition of leadership. It begins with a revolutionary business idea that remains current and relevant after over 30 years.

Sutton Through the Years

1983 – The first Sutton office opens – Sutton Group – West Coast Realty in North Vancouver, BC.

1984 – Sutton introduces voice mail for all REALTORS®. The second Sutton office opens in Coquitlam, BC.

1986 – The fourth Sutton office opens in Surrey, BC. Sutton introduces the pager for REALTORS®.

1988 – Fax machines are in Sutton offices. Sutton converts itself to a franchise network with approximately 1,000 REALTORS®.

1989 – Sutton wins independent contractor status for all of its REALTORS® from Revenue Canada, the first real estate company to do so.

1990 – Sutton expands into the Prairies.

1992 – Sutton stretches across to Atlantic Canada, making it a coast to coast organization.

1993 – Sutton experiences significant growth – 5,852 REALTORS®, an increase of 1,300 REALTORS® – a 28.5% growth in a one year period.

1994 – Sutton expands into Quebec.

1995 – Sutton is the first real estate company to have a website – www.sutton.com. They are also the first to provide each REALTOR® with a free email address and webpage.

1998 – Sutton partners with a major financial institution creating Sutton branded mortgages.

1999 – Sutton introduces the Sutton Spirit program – publicizing REALTORS® community efforts across Canada.

2002 – The Sutton branded mortgages shine, as funding exceeds $550 million.

2003 – Sutton celebrates its 20th year in business and holds its first Brokers Conference in Vancouver, BC.

2005 – Sutton reaches 8000 REALTORS® across Canada. Sutton holds its second Brokers Conference in Toronto, Ontario.

2007 – Sutton launches a new version of Sutton.com. Sutton holds its third Brokers Conference in Calgary, Alberta.

2008 – Sutton celebrates its 25th year in business serving the real estate market.

2009 – Sutton holds its first ever National Conference at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto, inviting hundreds of Sales Representatives, Brokers and Owners from across Canada.

2010 – Sutton launches the new Homebase intranet site that provides tools and resources to its users across Canada.

2011 – Sutton holds its second National Conference at the Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, attracting double the attendance of its first National Conference 2 years prior.

2012 – Sutton launches the ‘Sutton Print Store’ and ‘Sutton Sign Store’, which offer quick, interactive ways to create and print marketing materials and lawn signs.

2013 – Sutton celebrates its 30th year in business serving the real estate market.

Sutton Spirit

Taking a leadership role in corporate social responsibility through an initiative called ‘Sutton Spirit’, Sutton recognizes that its REALTORS® are also members of distinct Canadian communities where they live, work and play. As much as the Sutton System is designed to service local markets, Sutton Spirit strives to make meaningful connections by supporting local programs and giving to communities.

Whether it’s a summer camp for kids, sponsorship of teams, or coordinating fundraising events for the benefit of all, Sutton Spirit represents countless hours and millions of dollars donated through the work of Sutton, franchisees and devoted individuals.
